Which one is better: Timber or Composite deck?

When you are planning your dream deck, one of the most important decisions you will have to make is the choice of decking boards. Two of the most common options are wood (timber) and wood-plastic composites.
This article from https://www.localdeckbuilders.com.au/ will highlight the aspects to consider when comparing timber versus composite decking, whether you want to work yourself or employ a contractor.

Timber decking vs Composite decking material

Wood decking boards are solid and traditional and can easily be the best choice. There is a wide selection of rich, vibrant wood species to choose from. Natural wood has a beautiful appearance, but each type of wood has its unique problems. Whichever wood you choose, it will deteriorate over time.

That's why people are increasingly switching to wood-plastic composite decking made from recycled wood powder and high-density polyethylene.
Composite decking boards offer the same beautiful look like real wood while extending the life of the entire deck.

In the end, you are the one to choose the material for your deck's surface.

Wood vs. Composite decking - The Pros and Cons

Both have unique advantages and disadvantages, and you must decide which choice is better for you depending on your budget, specifications, and overall preferences. If you're not sure what actually the difference between composite and wood decking is, there are a few factors you can keep in your head when searching for the perfect material for your dream deck.

Electrical Hazards

Wherever there is electricity, there are safety hazards.
An electrical safety hazard can lead to potentially fatal accidents. It could lead to the loss or injury of a loved one, legal consequences for your business, and even an investigation into the safety of your business (and the risk of closure).

Electricity is a fundamental aspect of our daily lives. It powers our world and allows us to perform our everyday tasks like cooking, watching TV, baking bread and more. That’s why it’s important for every household, commercial establishment and industrial facility to be careful with electrical wiring, appliances and equipment.

Electrical hazards at home are especially problematic; your family can be unknowingly put in danger if you are not aware of potential problems and what to look out for.

Here are some electrical safety hazards you should be aware of:

1. Exposed electrical components

Exposed electrical components such as open power distribution panels, temporary lighting, and damaged equipment can cause electrocution and burns.

Be sure to place an appropriate protection system and warning signs around exposed electrical parts to prevent harm to people. This way, occupants are safe until a professional arrives to fix the problem.

2. Poor or defective wiring

High-quality wiring that meets safety standards is essential for safety. Poor wiring can increase the risk of fires, surges, arcing faults and other serious consequences. Due to this reason, it is best to avoid any do-it-yourself electrical work and hire professional electricians to do the wiring in your home.

Damaged, worn, cracked, or corroded electrical wiring can increase the risk of electrical accidents. Have a qualified electrician check the wiring regularly to make sure it is safe. When necessary, upgrade and replace old and faulty wiring.

Some electrical hazards include:

  • Loose or improper connections, such as to electrical outlets or switches
  • Frayed household appliances or extension cords
  • Pinched or punctured cord insulation
  • Cracked cord insulation due to heat, age, corrosion or bending
  • Overheated wires or cables
  • Damaged electrical equipment
  • Electrical wires that rodents have chewed on

3. Wet conditions near electricity

No doubt water is one of the best conductors of electricity. Touching electrical appliances with wet hands can result in electrocution. Also, electrical outlets in the kitchen or bathroom must be located a sufficient distance from water sources or pathways. This can be especially dangerous if water from burst pipes or damaged roofs enters the home.

Never use a radio, hairdryer, telephone, or other appliance in the bathtub, near the pool, or in a location with a wet floor. For fires caused by electricity, be sure not to use water. Use an appropriate fire extinguisher instead.

4. Outdated wiring

Cables that have not been replaced in more than 30 years are not only more likely to have poor or outdated insulation, cracks and heat damage. They also do not meet current standards. To avoid electric shocks and fires, have a professional electrician replace them with new wiring that meets the electrical requirements of modern appliances and equipment.

5. Handling electrical appliances with wet hands

Wet hands should never be used to operate electrical appliances, increasing the risk of electric shock. In the kitchen, this can happen if you have just washed your hands and you touch the power plug for an appliance. In the bathroom, before using a hairdryer, make sure your hands are completely dry.

6. Curious toddlers

Young children who are very curious and want to explore their world, especially toddlers, are most likely to get electrocuted if they bite into electrical cords or insert metal objects such as forks or knives into unprotected electrical outlets or appliances. Keep cords out of the hands of curious youngsters, unplug them when not in use, and install safety plugs in outlets.

7. Exposed sockets

Exposed electrical outlets are especially dangerous if you have small children or animals in the building.

Outlets at knee height or below can be covered with plastic latches that cannot be easily removed. Children that are curious have been known to stick all sorts of items into outlets. In older homes where safety switches or RCD’s have not been installed, resulting in deadly accidents, this can cause electrocution .

8. Overloading of extension cords

Extension cords should be carefully secured whenever possible to reduce the risk of tripping or accidents. Use plastic covers for unused outlets. Extension cables or cords should not be used as a permanent solution for additional outlets. Also, avoid using them for too many appliances at once.

security

9. Overloading power outlets

Plugging in multiple power boards seems like a good idea to get all the electrical devices working, but outlets are rated for a certain amount of current. In addition, some electrical fires are caused by plugging multiple high-voltage devices into a single power strip.

Instead, try spreading your electrical appliances across multiple outlets. If you do not have sufficient power points, get an electrician in to install outlets where you need them.

10. Overheating of objects near flammables

We don’t often think of light bulbs as an electrical hazard, but there is a risk of electrical fire when light bulbs are placed near flammable materials.

For example, it is dangerous to keep upholstery, curtains, and other combustible materials near lamps and light bulbs for extended periods. This can lead to overheating and, in some cases, a fire.

Therefore, always make sure to turn off the light switch before replacing a light bulb, and never replace a light bulb or handle a light switch with wet hands. Be sure always to use a light bulb with the correct wattage to avoid overheating.
Have you thought about swapping your old light globes that heat up, to LED’s?
LED’s do not get hot and they use a lot less electricity. Read our LED lighting article

11. Covered wires

Heavy covering of wires can cause the wires to overheat, leading to an electrical fire. Keep cables and wires away from other objects and leave them exposed.

Also, make sure appliances like computers and televisions have enough room for ventilation, so they don’t overheat.

  • Never attempt to repair electrical appliances yourself; always contact a licensed electrician.
  • Check your appliances regularly for broken switches, plugs, and frayed cords.
  • Avoid overloading electrical panels with too many appliances at once. For example, if a heater is plugged into the mains, unplug it before using the hair straightener.
  • Never plug anything into an appliance while it is plugged in or operating.
  • Outside the home, always use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use.
  • Make sure your hands are dry before handling switches or electrical appliances.
  • Before cleaning places like the kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room, make sure all appliances are turned off.

12. Doing electrical repairs yourself

Not only is any DIY electrical work illegal, it is also dangerous!
In all states of Australia – a qualified electrician must do all electrical work. See here for more information about Queensland
Professional electricians are skilled, certified and equipped to fix common electrical problems safely. However, all home electrical hazards can be deadly if your body encounters high voltages while fixing them yourself.

Paint Colours For A Hamptons Style Home

Choosing a paint theme for a Coastal or Hamptons style home is not something to be nervous about.
It is a current styling trend with many inspiration guides and colour choices, so you can choose a colour scheme that you love!

Adding your favourite colours can easily be done with soft furnishings, so the biggest decision you have to make is what the wall colour will be to plan what soft furnishing colours and textures you can add to create the layers in the room.

Long gone are the stark, minimalist traits of the late '90s and early 2000's Coastal or Hamptons styling does bring in the same elements of choosing simple colour choices, but they allow layers of the texture of soft furnishing and statement pieces.
It is no longer "white on white."

Are you planning on painting your home with a crisp white paint?
When you initially think about what colours to use for your home, you realise that choosing "white paint" is not as easy as it sounds.

What colour should you paint your walls depending on the type and shade of wood in your room?
The answer is surprisingly complex, but it does hinge on one feature in a home: the timber finishes and flooring in a home.
Many homes in Brisbane have timber or timber look flooring and choosing a shade that tones in with your flooring is the key thing to do.

Cooler Tones To Paint Your Walls

From a warm white to a cooler, green and grey tints, many different tones work well with various timbers!
Warmer whites tend to blend more seamlessly with the warmer timbers, but again, the complementary cool green tint also works if it's not too grey timber you could use for an even fresher look.
When using Warm whites, be aware that they can make your room seem smaller than it is, so if space isn't an issue, go ahead and choose a warmer colour.
Adding more grey to a modernised white can give your space that new look you're after.

Beiges are typically a cool neutral colour with an orange undertone. However, those who want to balance out this cold tone can go opposite the wheel and find warmer colours with hints of green in them, like peach or coral, for more warmth without being too overpowering.

Love the colour blue?
Light blue is a popular choice for timber as it blends in well.
However, if you have darker or more red timbers, consider using purple undertones like grey to blend the colours.

Paint Colours For Your Walls

To start getting your paint inspiration, head into your nearest paint store to pick up whites and neutrals' current colour swatches.
Make sure you know what your flooring is or have a sample of it to take in with you so you can quickly choose the shades that will work in with your flooring.

After narrowing down a few favourites, take sample pots home and paint them up on different surfaces of your room!
This will ensure you get the right hue for every space.
Make sure it's painted with two coats, and you allow them to dry completely before you start comparing the colours.
We also suggest painting the sample paint up next to the cornices and skirting boards so that you can see the difference in the colour tone when it up against a crip white painted trim.
Also, look at the painted areas at different times of the day with different lights. Natural light and artificial lights will bring out different tones in the paint.

Now that you have selected your paint choice, you can get started with booking a Brisbane painter or trying and doing the work yourself.

How To Choose A Decorative Cornice

Are you renovating a Queenslander or older syle home?
It can be daunting when working out how you are going to combine the modern day elements with period features.
Often these features are wall trims, skirting boards, cornices, ceiling roses.
Paint colours and tile patterns are also a part of the style brief

What Are The Different Building Eras?

Georgian: the period between 1750 and 1830. Cornices and mouldings tended to have a Roman influence and had fine details

Victorian: most popular in the period between 1837 and 1901 the Victorian period designs were based on imitation and reproduction. Mouldings had bold designs and tended to be heavily enriched. Many different styles were revived, and often had more than one influence featured on a single piece of cornice or moulding

Federation: Was between 1895 and 1915, inspired by existing European classical designs. This style featured  medallions, urns, bows, flowers and leaves and they were joined together by chains and drapes.

Art Deco: Most popular between 1907 and 1935, Art Deco began in Europe in the early years of the 20th century. It overlooked many traditional, classical influences in favour of more streamlined and geometric forms

Contemporary: from approximately 1950, following on the ‘modern design’ is the style that reflects anything currently trendy

Many Queenslanders fall into the Federation era. They also have a definite Asian influence as well. They are an iconic Queensland style.

decorative Cornice

Your New Cornice Style

When deciding how to renovate the rooms in an older style home you must consider the height of the ceilings.
Highset ceilings are perfect to use bigger and more ornate cornices and add features such as ceiling roses.
There is going to be a vast space to fill and larger cornices and decorative plaster like ceiling roses will not look out of place. In the main rooms of the house - They needcthese statement pieces so do take the calculated risk and opt for something a little larger than what you originally thought of.
Infact - you do not want to make a mistake and choose something not large enough.
In other rooms like a study or bedrooms you can choose something a little less grand.
We have done many of these types of renovations and we are more than happy to give some input into what we have seen and what has worked.

You Must Like The Decorative Plaster You Choose

When picking a cornice the NUMBER 1 Rule is
You have to likethe design!!
Do not get talked into something that you really do not like.
Sometimes it can take time for you to develop your taste when looking at a new style era

Ok lets take a look at more suggestions when choosing decorative cornices.

1 – Choose cornice that you like:

2 – Consider your ceiling height: The higher the ceiling in a room the bigger the cornice you can use.
Aso look to see if there is a matching ceiling rose.
Large cornices used in a room with low ceilings will create an out of proportion effect and appear to shrink the room.

Will Your Cornice Be A Statement Feature Or Not?

Are you trying to make a statement with your cornice or will it be an integral but unobtrusive feature of your overall decorative scheme?
You will have to work out your style brief before you start buying cornice and other trims.

Choose A Timeless Design

Just like when you choose the wall paint colour, you want to choose something that you can live with for the next 10 years plus. It is not easy to replace a permanment fixture like cornices if you fall out of love with that style.
There are dozens of classic designs to choose from so you will not be forced into only a few styles to pick from.
With paint colours or even lighting fixtures, you can change and update them when you decide you need to redecorate.
And just like paint comes in sample sizes, you can also buy samples of cornice so you can see how it will sit adjoing your walls and ceilings together.

We discussed building eras and most older himes in Australia are from the mid 1800's to the mid 1900's so the older homes will usually be Victorian and Federation homes.
Do not get hung up on the style of the home though.
Unless you are renovationing a heritage protected home, you will be able to let your design choices be heard.
You will be bringing in modern influences so it does not have to be a true representaion of that era but you do want to pay homage to it

Do The Renovation Work Right

Having decorative plaster done right will increase the value of your home when you do decide to sell down the track.
As we mentioned paint, light fittings and even carpets can be ripped up and replaced to be upgraded to a new look by the next owners.
Permanant fixtures like cornices adds the character to a home and people want these features and then to put their own spin on the style.

Make Sure You Hire The Right Plasterer

We are often called to a renovation to fix up the work of a previous plasterer or a home owner who decided to DIY.
When it comes to renovation work - The budget must be understood and it needs to be kept to
When buying decorative plaster and trims, you must get your measurements correct.
You do not want to be wasting expensive cornice by a miscalulation.
It is not always easy to find the style that you want and if you run out part way they have minimum order amounts.
Plus the time it takes to leave the site and go chasing to go and get what you need.
It is not something that the local plaster and building supply outlet just keeps in stock
It is something that needs to be ordered in.
