Where to start when It is time to clean your carpets.

Your carpets will need to be cleaned from time to time
If you are in a rental property most rental agreements will require the carpets to be cleaned.
Some will stipulate that it MUST be a proffessional carpet cleaning company and you will be required to present a recepit as proof of having it done

Other times you can get away with cleaning your own carpets and even cleaning rugs

The most important factor when deciding whether to clean your own carpets or call for professional help is generally the cost followed by how long it should take.

If you have a busy and active home with kids and pets, Professionally deep cleaning your carpets every 12 to 18 months to remove embedded dirt and grime will extend the life of of your carpets.
It is the embedded dirt that causes carpet fibres to become discoloured and to wear away.

Homemade Cleaners for Carpets

Perfect for spot cleaning or small areas. Be careful not to get the underlay too wet as this can also cause further staining.
  • Detergent solution: Mix ¼ teaspoon of a clear liquid dishwashing detergent, into one cup of lukewarm water.
  • Vinegar solution: Mix one cup of white vinegar with two cups of water. ( If you have a natural fibre carpet use ¼ cup of white vinegar with ¼ cup of water.
  • Solvent solution: Use an oil solvent. Or substitute a non-acetone nail polish remover.

Dip your clean light-colored cloth into the soluton and start to work on the stains. Work the cloth into the stains allow to dry and give it a vacuum and then repeat if necessary
Always do a spot test somewhere first ( I will use carpet that is inside a walk in wardrobe as my testing spots)
Never pour the cleaning solutions directly onto the carpeting.

If this method is going to take too long - It will save a lot of time by using commercial carpet cleaners and you will have your carpets smelling fresh and free of dirt and stains a whole lot sooner with no effort.
The carpets will also dry more quickly as it is steam that is going into the carpet fibres rather than liquid.

The Right Vacuum Cleaner

To get the best carpet cleaning results, vacuuming always plays an integral part of the process
Carpets must be vacuumed before doing any wet or damp cleaning.
By removing the dirt from the carpet pile means that you won't be making "mud" when you apply wet cleaning products or start steam cleaning the carpets
The vacuum cleaner needs to be able to effectively deep clean the pile and leave the pile standing up so you can reach the bottom of the fibres when cleaning it

What to Consider While Vacuum Shopping

Modern vacuums come in a range of designs, sleek shapes, and cool colors.
What matters most is how well they clean. Remember that one type of vacuum might have features that appeal to you, but it should also fit your cleaning needs.
Pet owners, take note: upright and barrel vacuum cleaners that excel at regular cleaning should also be the best in show for picking up pet hair.
Stick vacuums are lighter and more portable to use - but their suction power is not as good as a regular upright or barrel style machine
You will need to consider if you will use a bagless machine. They dosave the cost of having replacement bags - But their filters will need regular cleaning and replacements.

Rug Cleaning vs. Carpet Cleaning

A proper area rug cleaning is a must in order to prolong their life and prevent them from wearing before the due time but the carpet cleaning process can be totally different than the area rug cleaning if you are deaing with oreintal style rugs or carpets.

Area rugs are very different than carpets, and thus need to be cleaned differently.
Here’s why:

CONSTRUCTION
The biggest difference is that area rugs are simply constructed differently than wall-to-wall carpets. Rugs are made to be picked up and moved as needed, while carpets are designed to be firmly anchored into place.
There are so many different types of area rugs from different styles and counties of origin, and they all require slightly different care.

DRY Dirt REMOVAL
Most rugs are made to be thicker and more luxurious under foot with a dense pile construction. This provides a perfect place for dirt and soil to get caught. A vacuum cleaner's suction usually cannot penetrate into these tight fine fibers. That’s why you would use to see people taking their rugs outside and beating them clean.

Nowadays, you can just trust a professional rug cleaner to remove this build-up for you.

BLEEDING AND COLOUR RUN

Most carpets are a single color, so bleeding isn’t much of a concern.
However, in area rugs with intricate patterns, color bleeding can completely ruin the look of a rug.
It is important to use the correct solutions and methods to clean an area rug in order to prevent bleeding and fading from happening.

FRINGES AND TASSLES

Because carpet goes wall-to-wall, you don’t have to worry about fringe; there isn’t room for it. However, in rugs, fringe can be delicate and must be properly taken care of in order not to damage it or ruin the color.

You may need to hire an Oriental rug care specialist

Many carpet cleaning professionals have rug cleaning expertise as well, but, if the label on the care advice tag says dry clean only, your best bet may be to roll it up and take it to a dry cleaner.
Caring for oriental, turkish, or persian rugs — clean imported rugs according to your carpet manufacturer’s specifications or bring in a professional cleaning service.
